Held at the Ellis Park Stadium, Spain won the game eliminating Paraguay to advance in the Semi Finals Round at a score of 1-0 thereby advancing to the Semi Finals Round to face Germany.
The match was an exciting game as the world awaited which team would score first. There were no goals committed during the first half. However, two unsuccessful goals through penalty kicks happened in the second half as they were all saved by their respective goal keepers. The first happened in the 59th minute through Cardozo of Paraguay. Cardozo stroke the penalty with power but Casillas equaled it. The second attempt happened in the 62nd minute through Alonso of Spain but Paraguay’s goal keeper J. Villa saved the ball low to his left.
Finally, in the 83rd minute, the first and only successful goal committed in the game went to Spain through its star player once again, David Villa. Iniesta created space and ran at goal before sliding the ball to Pedro. The Barcelona midfielder looked odds-on to score, but hit the far post. The ball ricocheted into the path of David Villa whose shot hit the post before rebounding across the other post and finally hitting the back of the net.
That was David Villa’s 43rd international goal. He is now just one goal shy of Raul’s 44, Spain’s all-time record. He was also the first Spaniard to score in four consecutive FIFA World Cup matches. Towards the end of the game, Paraguay did their best to score at least one goal to draw the game against Spain which would prompt for an extension of time. However, that did not happen until the final whistle was heard in the 94th minute marking the end of the match.
Congratulations to Spain for winning in this match, most especially to David Villa which became their hero once again. Spain will now advance to the Semi Finals while Paraguay will need to go home as they were eliminated in the World Cup 2010 finals.
