Presenting the New Wonder Woman

Written by on Thursday, July 1st, 2010

After decades of dressing in a star-spangled spandex, DC presents the new Wonder Woman. The new version removes all of the revealing sides of Wonder Woman and puts her in pants and a clothed-all costume as if they were censored by some sort of censorship board.

Although the new look seems to be fine many will surely not like an all-clothed Wonder Woman. DC’s change came about on the 600th episode of Wonder Woman which came out yesterday in comic book shops. Besides the new costume, Diana will be handling a more unstable future ahead as the God’s decided to lift their protection of the Island. Seems like more to the direction of the instability haunting the DC Universe including Batman and Superman.

This is not however the first time that DC decided to change the costume of Wonder Woman. Along its life Diana and his superhero alter-ego had undergone some costume changes as well.

Wonder Woman first appeared in CD Comics in All Star Comics #8 released on December 1941. Since then, Wonder Woman’s costume has been relatively unchanged from her boots, tiara and bracelets to its patriotic themes.

The first appearance of Wonder Woman said to have lacked the feminist appeal that later versions have had. The first Wonder Woman had all of its signature items including her boots, tiara and bracelet but back then she wore a skirt. Later on the skirt was changed to hot pants in order to add appeal to the character.

The first biggest event and change for Wonder Woman came in the 1960s when DC decided to bring in a new story line. Woner Woman decided to gave up her powers and became a crime fighting martial artist however fans and feminists was not pleased. A campaign to bring back Wonder Woman’s powers was started and the biggest protest came when Gloria Steinem put a giant-sized Wonder Woman on the cover of the first issue of Ms. Magazine.

Later on DC decided to bring her powers back and in recent years, Wonder Woman’s costume has become more revealing, and her character has become darker and more complex.

If we look at this progression and history (referenced from ABC), we will see that the latest makeover of DC move away from the trend and experimented a new on the New Wonder Woman.

So what are your reactions to this latest make-over of DC? Are you happy with it? Share us your feedbacks.

  4. I like it. Probably better to have gone with that armoured costume that Donna Troy wore in her five minutes as Wonder Woman, but this is good too. I’m not succumbing to “OMG she’s wearing pants this is awful!” hysteria, anyway…
