Twitter – Big Hit in Japan. Twitter, the super famous micro-blogging platform is a big hit in Japan. However over there, they call a tweet a “mumble” – their translation of tweet – to give Japanese micro-bloggers a feeling of ”at homeness”. The arrival of the Japanese version of Twitter back in 2008 was very much welcome especially with the younger generation.
This big hit was made even bigger when a mobile version of the service started last October. This was instant success in Japan because of the already prevailing “culture” of Internet-connecting cell phones.
The Twitter phenomenon has invaded Japan so strong that there are seminars just to teach “the tricks of the tweet”. Users of Twitter are ending sentences with “nah-woo” (in English – now) to show that they are “in” and versatile in pseudo-English Twitter “language”.
Twitter has pervaded the Japanese society that everyone is using them. From celebrities to politicians to plain civilians. And with the World Cup going on, tweets about the sports is being circulated all the time.
